Setting Up

Joel and his uncle Ben are getting the multi-tool all set up. It's being pulled behind an 8-wheeler tractor. The multi-tool disks (or lightly rips up the soil) and then compacts the surface to retain the moisture in the ground. They have already spread a fertilizer on the field. By incorporating it in with the soil, the nutrients won't dry out. When the corn seeds are planted in a few weeks, there will be nutrients waiting in the soil to help them get started. It's good to see the spring chores being done.

Looks like they're working hard, or hardly working.

Releasing Pheasants

Joel brought in some pheasants to help populate his wildlife areas.  The cousins were in town so they all helped release the birds.  

 

They had to hold the birds by the legs and wait for them to stop flapping around.

 Then they would swing to the count of three...

and let the birds go.  Freedom!

 E loved it and unloaded a bunch of crates herself.

Even W joined in.  Just another day on the farm.

3 Generations

No Farms= No Food

Here are two picture books that we enjoy at our house.  They both deal with food coming from a farm.  There are people out there who don't understand the connection between farms and food.  Books are great places to start the converstaion. 

 

How did that get in my lunchbox? is an information book.  It goes through different lunch items and where they come from.  Kids' favorite seem to be the chocolate.

 

Who grew my soup? follows a similar idea but in a more literary story telling way.  Kids love the ryhyme and the word, "booger."

New Life

The baby cows are being born.  It's a sure sign that spring is on the way.  We took a Sunday drive out to see the new little ones.
