Here in the desert we irrigate our fields. This is a field of grass that our cows graze. We use a flood system. Ditches along the top of the field are filled with water. Syphon tubes pull the water up onto the field. Each field has been laser leveled to allow a constant flow of water. When water reaches the bottom of the field the "water has to be changed." Which means that the tubes are pulled and set farther down the ditch line where they water the next part of the field.

The cows in the background are the mamas and babies who have moved down to graze on the pasture grass. They will graze on one field while the other is being irrigated.
This is dry land pasture. It has never been irrigated. For example for every 18 square inches there is one plant.
This is irrigated pasture that has one plant every square inch. Lots more grass from irrigation equals lots more food for our cows. Water is life out here.
